In 1994, the sci-fi adventure film, Stargate became a surprise blockbuster hit, but the mythos didn’t secure a lasting legacy until it moved to television in the form of Stargate SG1. It was so successful that during its sixth year, talks began regarding a new television spin-off in the form of Stargate Atlantis.

Head to squarespace.com/rowanjcoleman to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code rowanjcoleman In 1977, director Steven Spielberg wowed audiences with the spectacular science fiction adventure Close Encounters of the Third Kind. After a costly flop with his comedy, 1941, Spielberg returned to form with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Once again an in-demand director, Spielbe...

In 1977, in the wake of Star Wars, audiences were given another dose of the sci-fi fantastical in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Audiences were no strangers to aliens and flying saucers in movies, but that kind of subject matter was usually in the domain of cheap B-movies from a bygone era. At the tail end of such a cynical decade of cinema, it must have been utterly dazzling to be met wit...
Stargate SG1 (Seasons 6-10) Retrospective/Review - Stargate Retrospective, Part 3

Stargate SG1 rode success for five years, garnering a passionate fanbase who now saw the series as the definitive incarnation of Stargate, superseding the original movie. It was quite a shock to these fans when at the end of its fifth season, the show was cancelled by its original network and one of its main cast members departed the series. If any other series was dealt such a blow, it likely ...
Star Trek's "Cinematic" Problem
Просмотров 124 тыс.2 месяца назад
For the longest time, Star Trek existed as a low-budget TV show. Next to sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars, Star Trek always seemed cheaper and dare we say, kinda lame. But all of that changed in 2009. Director JJ Abrams completely overhauled Star Trek’s visual style for his reboot of the mythos. Though Abrams is no longer involved in the Star Trek mythos, modern Star Trek generally took his s...

In 1994 science fiction was gifted a new icon in the form of Stargate. Though it received mixed reviews from critics, the film wowed audiences with its imaginative concepts, impressive effects and spectacular world. The film became the sleeper hit of that year and it didn’t take long for the film’s director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin to start entertaining the idea of a sequel. Alt...
What Good Writing Actually Means
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 месяца назад
In any online discussion surrounding film, TV, novels, comics, games - stories in general - one of the most common criticisms thrown around is “bad writing.” This is a term I’ve grown to really dislike. Not only is this term incredibly vague but it also splits the craft of storytelling into a reductive binary. There is bad writing and then there is good writing. Which begs the question, what do...
Should We Fear Technology? - The Philosophy of Star Trek

Have you ever noticed how weirdly rustic Star Trek's future looks? Despite the presence of highly advanced physics-defying technologies, there's a conspicuous absence of automation and cybernetics as well as the lack of advanced robotics. Elements which are common to other sci-fi universes are all missing from Star Trek. Why? Patreon: www.patreon.com/rowanjcoleman Discord: discord.gg/BYxQNuD Sp...
How Star Trek's Future Works - Money, Work and Property

How does Star Trek’s future society work? A world without money seems alien to the point of impossibility to many people. The difficulty in answering this question has led to numerous fan theories, essays, non-fiction books and even some dismissals. So here is my two cents on the subject. It’s based on what we’ve seen and heard in the Star Trek mythos combined with my extrapolations and ideas t...

Stargate Retrospective, Part 1: In the early 90s, fresh off the success of Universal Soldier, director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, sought to make a new sci-fi epic adventure which would merge the ancient and the alien. The result was the 1994 movie, Stargate! Though never lauded as a work of great storytelling, Stargate's rich mythos and striking visuals would soon spawn a vast un...

Star Trek is actually based on a resource based economy created by the Venus Project. The one aspect of it usually not explained by Star Trek because it’s complicated is social engineering. The understanding that nurture influences nature, so showing positive reinforcement of certain behavior and negative reinforcement to others alters the way our brains and personality functions. so yes, we are predator species, but these traits desensitized or over incentivized depending on culture. Our baser instincts are always there, but the true nature of humans is that we are the most influenceable species on the Earth as well as the most sociable. As you can see the more I talk about the more complicated it gets hence the reason why Jean Ron Barry didn’t wanna explain it.

Best Start Trek film? Yes, but I think the best film ever made. This is a stand alone film even if you didn't know anything about it. The cast, the script, editing and score are outstanding. This will stay among my all-time favorites including The Wizard of Oz; it's just that iconic and on a grand scale. It is absolutely brilliant. The only thing it lacks, is an in-person meeting with Khan and Kirk in the same room at the same time. I overlook that because I have to, but it would have been nice to see another hand-to-hand combat between them.

I like that you placed Dr- Phlox and 'Zimmerman' at the top, though I would place Bashir a little higher on your list. Reason being is that like many nerds who became doctors, this was a character at the beginning of his journey of becoming a doctor. He choose to become one by performing 'frontier-medicine' (offending folks like Kira). He was always stumbling over himself as a doctor and scientist. Dealing with being this series awkward male character in Trek, as all series seems to have one or two, and yet somehow rising to the occasion. Bashir wasn't just a sometimes frustrated scientist/doctor, he had a frustrating personal life as well. Not only with love, but with professional and personal friendships also. He stuttered at times, because he was unsure of himself (with Dax asking her for a date), and could be the hero (with Odo treating the wounded), both sides were shown in the pilot 'Emissary'. He cured a generational plague in 'the Quickening'. And often debated curing alien cultures like in that episode and in 'Hypocratic Oath'. His character was the first to reshape Trek's view on 'augments', and delving into Trek's covert Section 31. And by way of the DS9 writers, Bashir's naive friendship gave us Garak, and his flair gave us holodeck creation Vic Fontaine. He gave us a view of someone straight out of the academy, and his journey towards a seasoned 7-year war veteran.

I am a fan of Frank Herbert though, not a fan of Dune. I do prefer his Pandora series and while I wouldn't mind someone making a series (mini or not), I am worried about how they would butcher it as they have with Dune

Gene Roddenberry took pains to set the series on a firm foundation of real science, but some of the episodes have really bad science, such as The Alternative Factor. The hardness varies from one episode to another. Also, we can't know what unexpected discoveries will be made in the future. So the number of "miracle exemptions" is not necessarily a good measure of plausibility. Today, when we read The Black Star Passes, the description of a giant aircraft with 40 propellers on each wing sounds silly now that we have jet engines. To me, control panels on a starship seem implausible since by the time we develop a superluminal drive we should have the technology to control machinery by thought.

I'd describe Star Trek as sciencey soft science fiction. Or maybe sciencesque or something like that. It's got a lot of handwavey tech, but leans into the sciencing stuff out with it.

I remember coming home from school and putting on Stingray and Captain Scarlet. I saw UFO and Space: 1999 when they came out in the USA. Despite my annoyance at the really bad science, I enjoyed these shows and picked up the related paperback books. The first season of Space: 1999 was definitely better, with a more intelligent, philosophical tone. Maya was silly, and I was saddened by Bergman's absence. The aliens in Space: 1999 seemed much more truly alien than the aliens in other shows, but I don't know if that was the writing or just the European acting style. My favorite episodes were Breakaway, where the crew is trying to solve a scientific mystery, and War Games, with its interesting alien culture. UFO was interestingly bizarre and had some really good stories. I also liked the purple-haired moonbase girls. If only we'd had all that cool technology back in 1980!

A writer shouldn't make promises he can't keep. If you keep telling the viewers that the Cylons have a plan, then the Cylons damn well better have a plan that is eventually revealed. If the story is centered around finding Earth, then the show should conclude with the protagonist actually finding Earth, as promised. Having the end of the story turn out to be a massive cop-out is not good writing. So yes, you do need a plan so you have some idea where you're going.

Babylon 5 was done very well the first time, so there's nothing for a reboot to improve on. I want to see something new, not a pointless rehash of something I've already seen. I want a reboot of Crusade so I can see the rest of the story. That would also familiarize people with this universe. I have no problem with updating the CGI for the original Babylon 5 series, as was done with the original Star Trek series. Also, note that the second in command (originally Laurel Takashima) was originally intended to be a traitor.

JMS did his best to get the science right. He was aware that sound can't travel through a vacuum, so he tried just using music during space battles to reflect this reality.

Just when we were starting to get the bigger picture the show was abruptly canceled. I don't want a Babylon 5 reboot. That show was done very well already. I want a Crusade reboot so I can finally see the rest of the story and find out where JMS was going with it.

In regards to Odo. The Bajoran's left him in the position he was in during the occupation as the Constable. Naris gets along with him and goes to him for support regarding issues with the Federation. There are a few Bajorans that dislike him, most treat him with respect. He is never charged for any crime against the Bajorans even though the Bajorans are looking for revenge for the wrongs done to them during the occupation. It is apparent that Odo was so even handed and honorable in his position during the occupation that he was respected by all sides. While Odo comes off as cold and an agent of Law and Order, he does have a heart, he has a deep sense of right and wrong, and I suspect that he was tolerant of the Bajoran resistance as much as he could get away with. It is important that as a changeling he was not "personally" involved so to speak in the issues between the Bajorans and the Cardasians, he was more neutral. In being seen as neutral and fair he could do things that by taking a side he could not. It makes for a very interesting character and one that is more inline with the real world of there being few things that are black and white, but there are many shades of gray that must be navigated.

In my opinion, SG1 should have ended with season 8, having one supporting season with the transition to Atlantis and then given SGA a 6th season to free Pegasus of the Wraith and ran that season in parallel with SGU's first season (which badly needed a supportive season considering the genre change).
